Nothing to spend but time

Hello Dear Reader,

Another no spend day and how I didn't pay the plumber.

Here, in deepest darkest Cornwall - we have almost 0% visibility, with 100% Humidity. It's the first day in a long while that I've been trapped in all day.

The day didn't start well. We have old toilets with large cisterns that use a lot of water. I wanted a plumber to change the syphon systems so they would only flush six litres. The plumber turned up and just wanted to change both toilets, even though I had explained what I wanted.  I didn't like him when I asked for his:ID, proof of qualifications and proof of limited liability insurance, accidental damage insurance and whether a warranty would be provided, I also wanted his company full name and address and proof of relevant qualifications. He had none and was embarrassed that I'd asked. He went on his way and I called the company to explain why I didn't let him in and they  were defensive. "We're not rogue traders you know" he said to me down the phone. I explained that I didn't know that and didn't have money to waste. If you would like a comprehensive list of questions to ask any trader, you can down load an 'app'(trustmark) for your phone or go to the website www.trustmark.org.uk. You can use the app to keep a log of the conversation so you can remember what you both agreed when you let someone in to give you an estimate/quote. Don't ever accept an 'estimate' and only a quote backed up with a contract even if it's only for your syphon systems being replaced.

The end of that debacle was that I didn't let him in so he couldn't charge me for the call out and I won't be using that company.

Trapped by the rain, I gave the house a good clean and set about turning a skirt into a scarf. It's a sort of flattened out tube and easier enough to make even though the skirt was cut on the bias.

Another job I did today was to mend the broken apron. It had lost one of the apron strings off the back so I substituted it with part of the tie of the wrap around skirt which I had de-constructed to make the scarf.  I'll say it again, I can never have too many tea towels or aprons.

I'm aching from quilting - it's a huge thing to balance, move and hold on to - I'm a quarter of the way there and will do a couple of square feet a day. It keeps me dry and out of the rain.

You can see in the photo below some of the bubbly design and where I've yet to quilt.

Until tomorrow,

Love Froogs xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  3. You know it never occurred to me to ask questions like that to a plumber. It's usually agree a price and a time after i tell them what i want. Although i haven't had anything to complain about. I will be doing so in future though. Thanks

  4. Not every tradesman is a rogue trader and not every tradesman can produce certificates of qualification on there trade. My OH was trained by his father and my son is being trained by his father. Not every trade can only produce a quote as your cant always see the full extent of work that needs doing until work commences,in saying that my OH always explains that if for example boards need replacing on a flat roof how much it will cost per board(this can not be determined until roof stripped)
There are bad trades people but bad people are around in all aspects of life. But there are an awful lot of good trades people who will always allow you to obtain references, inspect previous work.

  5. Regarding using less water per flush, I have filled water bottles and placed them in my cistern, displaces the water so prevents less water filling after each flush. Save prob about a litre per flush and it didn't cost a thing :). Cxx

  9. Frugal Up North has already said the same as the Environment Centre advises us here. We are told to place a brick in the toilet cistern to reduce water consumption. I think a few plastic bottles should work well too.
Re the tradesman ... ask those questions when you telephone for the appointment. You asked him to come and that was a verbal contract. You could still be charged for the call out and even taken to court for the costs. Good plan, wrong time though.

  10. Hi Louise - I've got hippo bags in my cistern and it reduces the capacity by 750ml - I don't flush very often, but it's a 13 litre cistern in comparison with a modern 6 litre flush. I can be converted - I'll get my son to replace both loo's with new ones, when I can afford to. The tradesman did not meet industry standards, had no ID (could have been a rapist in a boiler suit!) and no one should let anyone in without seeing credentials - basic trading standards advice - they can charge me for a call out as I asked them to come and they explained their charges - but my advice to anyone, is never employ anyone who isn't qualified, insured and will give you a quote in writing. If they don't know how long it will take to do the job, then don't employ them. It's your choice but I don't take risks with what little money I have.

  11. sorry - Hippo bags in each reduces water by 2.5 litres - still 10.5 litres per flush

  12. Hi Froogs,

That skirt has soooo much fabric. Great find!

I haven't crafted in a while. Too busy in the garden and being busy with an active kid doing other stuff such as playgrounds.

I'm itching to get crafting again. Maybe when the rains start again and we are stuck inside.

  13. I love the colours in the quilt and the quilting look so good.

You have inspired me to try quilting and I am working on a single bed quilt for my granddaughter.

In the meantime, here is my first modest little effort. http://organisedcastle.wordpress.com/2012/08/06/a-unique-gift/

  14. I don't know about "across the pond" but here in the US- replacing toilets is pretty cheap- usually cheaper than even having a plumber make a house call. I think I paid $118 (US) for my toilet and it is a new, modern, low flow one and works well.

The quilt is soooo pretty! Such cheery bright colors, I love it! The scarf is nice too! I love those batik sort of look, prints!
